Artist's Statement

Everyone will have their own connotations to the same images of the suburbs since we have grown through different experiences, yet, regardless of the emotion, the heavy weight of the images will remind us all of childhood as we prepare to leave for college somewhere completely different. One might say that there are suburbs everywhere, so what is different? The purpose of this project is to exactly point out why that question is not valid. The differences are in the images. Albeit subtle differences, but remarkably significant when impressed upon youth.

  2. Your project was very beautifully executed! You chose a fitting song to go with your video and the images perfectly matched the pauses and progression of the song. I was impressed that you were able to make it both personal and relatable!

  3. I enjoyed the combination of a visual and auditory project. The video highlightss normal, everyday items and places in a beautiful way. The song made it seem more personal which I really liked.

  4. I had no idea you could sing so well! Amazing job. I really liked the live music vs. the silent video--I always feel awkward just staring at a singer, so having the video to look at was nice :) I really liked the scene idea you took from Mrs. Dalloway, and I thought you executed it really well through the video/music. I'd love to see a copy of the lyrics as well.

  5. Quality video and music. Very well done. I believe that this project did exactly what you set out to do. It made small moments seem bigger and more important. The song choice also fit quite well with a slightly melancholy tone to it.

  6. I loved the mix of music and watching the video simultaneously. I loved a lot of the effects you used in the video like the reversal of washing your hand and sky change. It made me want to stop and appreciate the little things in my life like as if my life is going too fast.

  7. I loved it! I could see the personal touches and that made it much more enjoyable. I felt like it was as more of a tribute than it was an critique on "the suburbs" and was almost like a goodbye, since we're about to leave Pasadena and enter the real world.

  8. I really enjoyed the live performance. Because you were telling a personal story, I felt it gave a nice twist instead of completely distancing yourself from the video.

  9. I really enjoyed this project. Your concept is so interesting...the importance of subtleties really is great, and I think your film and song was a unique way of showing that. The song choice (and your voice!) were also a perfect background for the film. Good job!!

  11. I enjoyed watching the collage of images you presented---the ones about home and school reminded me of my daily routine traveling from school to home and around my community. As someone who likes to focus on the small things in life, I appreciate your focus on the subtlety of the images you are conveying. So often, we tend to neglect the small things and forget about them.

You are a very good singer, Terra.
